Claudia Sheinbaum seeks dialogue with Trump and negotiates tariffs this week

MEXICO CITY.- President Claudia Sheinbaum said she will seek a new agreement on the 25% tariffs on Mexican products proposed by her counterpart Donald Trump and whose entry into force was postponed weeks ago.
At her morning press conference, the president said that, if necessary, she will schedule another call with the US president to discuss the matter.
We recall that the tariffs announced by Trump were to come into effect on February 3, but were postponed to March 4 following a telephone call between the heads of state of both countries.
“We are having these conversations that we hope will take place this week.”
Claudia Sheinbaum added that her government will collaborate with the United States , a country that demands greater efforts to combat fentanyl trafficking from Mexico , but without ceasing to demand respect for Mexican sovereignty.

The president assured that Mexico “is doing its job” to reduce the rates of insecurity and high-impact crimes.
In this regard, he also questioned why there is no investigation into who is trafficking fentanyl within the United States or alternative routes of entry into the country.
“Let me ask, do the precursors enter through the United States? We don’t know. I mean, why is it only said that it enters through Mexico and Canada? Why not investigate whether it enters through the United States?”
From the National Palace , he assured that his administration is seeking to help the United States face its “humanitarian crisis” due to fentanyl consumption, as well as prevent drugs from reaching this or any other country in the world.
He also stressed that drug use must be addressed from a public health perspective.
Finally, the president defended the four axes of her security strategy: addressing the causes of violence, consolidating the National Guard , using intelligence against crime, and coordination between federal and state authorities.
