Flag Day is celebrated in the Plaza Mayor of Torreón

The Torreón City Council held this Monday the civic act commemorating Flag Day held on the Plaza Mayor esplanade. The event was chaired by the mayor of the city, Román Alberto Cepeda González, and was attended by authorities from the XI Military Region as well as representatives of the three levels of Government, the educational and business sectors.
The mayor stressed that February 24 is an emblematic date, since the National Flag is the fundamental symbol that grants identity to Mexicans. The event began at 9:00 a.m., honors were paid to the national flag and later the meaning of the Mexican Flag was read. It was explained that the flag, along with the coat of arms and the national anthem, are the symbols that represent the population that unites them as a Mexican nation. This date was established in 1934 and officially recognized in 1940 by decree of then President Lázaro Cárdenas del Río.
The national flag consists of a rectangle divided into three vertical stripes of identical size with the colors in the following order from the flagpole: green, white and red. The central white stripe has the national shield; the colors mean: green for hope, white for unity and red for the blood of national heroes.

Mayor Román Alberto Cepeda González presented the escort with the flag that accompanied the municipality of Torreón in civic events over the last four years , as a sign of honour, and for the completion of her last journey to be taken to the cauldron for her cremation, with the intonation of the Military Call of Silence, by the War Band.
