IECM and Cuajimalpa sign agreement on participatory democracy

The Electoral Institute of Mexico City (IECM) signed an agreement with the Cuajimalpa mayor's office to promote civic education and participatory democracy in the district.

Through the agreement, the mayor and councillors agreed to collaborate to organise various forums, roundtables, conferences, community events, training activities and actions to promote democratic culture.

The agreement seeks to "provide the elements so that the population knows how to interact with the authorities, what their rights are, what they can ask for, but also, in a responsible manner, they know what their obligations are," said the president of the IECM, Patricia Avendaño .

For his part, the mayor of Cuajimalpa , Carlos Orvañanos , said that the Participatory Budget is a tool that shows, at a national and international level, how this instrument can be used so that the population can decide on the use of public resources to improve their environment.

“It is a challenge that we must set ourselves as a mayor. Here I am launching a mission to my work team, that Cuajimalpa will be a creative, avant-garde mayor's office , in which we have to do everything so that people are encouraged to participate, because more participation means more democracy and a better quality of life ,” he said.
