Jamieson Greer confirmed as US trade representative; will negotiate tariffs and USMCA

The United States Senate on Wednesday, February 26, by a vote of 56 to 43, confirmed Jamieson Greer as U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), a position from which he will seek to implement President Donald Trump 's foreign trade agenda , focused on the imposition of tariffs on trading partners.
The new trade representative will work closely with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to investigate the impact of tariffs on imported goods and propose solutions. The plan will focus on five categories: tariffs on U.S. goods , “unfair” taxes such as VAT, non-tariff barriers, exchange rate policies and other trade practices.
Greer's confirmation comes at a critical time, just before Trump reactivates 25 percent tariffs on products from Mexico and Canada , a measure that could come into effect on March 4.
During her hearing, Greer said she will propose changes to the USMCA before its scheduled review in 2026. Trump already ordered the USTR office on January 20 to begin taking public comments on the agreement.
The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard , was one of the first counterparts to congratulate him on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
“Congratulations Jamieson on your ratification as U.S. Trade Representative. See you tomorrow in Washington. Best wishes,” he wrote.
This Thursday, February 27, Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard will travel to Washington , DC, to hold high-level meetings with officials of the U.S. administration, with the aim of continuing bilateral dialogue and avoiding the imposition of tariffs announced by Donald Trump . It should be noted that Secretary Ebrard traveled last week accompanied by his team.
