Ronald Johnson leaves Fernández Noroña standing

MEXICO CITY.— Ronald Johnson , the United States ambassador to Mexico, did not arrive yesterday Friday to a meeting scheduled at 10:00 a.m. with Gerardo Fernández Noroña , president of the Senate Board of Directors.

According to El Universal , the Senate's Social Communications department reported shortly after the scheduled time that the meeting—which the senator from the Morena legislative group had presumed—would not take place.

The same newspaper reported that on the evening of Thursday, June 5, a letter from the United States Embassy in Mexico arrived at the Senate canceling the meeting between Ambassador Johnson and Fernández Noroña.

As Noroeste.com.mx reports, the Morena senator boasted Wednesday night that he would meet with Johnson in his Senate office, even saying that his opponents were "going to die" over the high-level meeting.

"You're going to die. You know who's coming to the office on Friday? The U.S. ambassador is coming to my office on Friday," the senator boasted in a video broadcast live on social media.

So far, neither Johnson nor the Embassy has issued a statement or given reasons for canceling the meeting with Fernández Noroña, who has been a vocal critic of President Trump, calling him racist and classist.
