HERMOSILLO.- The process to select who will lead the University of Sonora the next 5 years is underway.
Only six candidates who meet the requirements of the call were registered, in this case the academics Dena Maria Jesus Camarena Gomez, Cuauhtemoc Gonzalez Valdez, Aaron Aurelio Grageda Bustamante, Maria Elena Robles Baldenegro, Ezequiel Rodriguez Jauregui and Judith Celina Tanori Cordova, according to the report offered by the electoral commission of the institution.
The issue is not minor and marks the political agenda in Sonora in the phase prior to the definitions of the profiles that will run for governor in 2027 .
In Sonora, the University has become a sort of political spoils; power groups identified with the ruler in power have always sought to influence internal politics and control the various instances of what is considered the highest educational institution in the state.
In this case, there are three profiles widely identified with the Fourth Transformation in particular, Cuauhtémoc González is an asset of the leftist forces who, through the unity of university action, promoted the vision of democratizing and transforming the University.
On the other hand, Judith Tanorí has just left her position as federal deputy. In this case, she was the substitute for the incumbent, Wendy Briseño Zuluaga, who took a leave of absence to join Alfonso Durazo 's government cabinet as secretary of social development, a position she later left to seek the leadership of the Morena party, an objective she failed in, as Judith Armenta was elected in her place.
Aaron Grajeda, in this case, was secretary of education and culture in the state of Sonora in the first half of Alfonso Durazo's six-year term, however, he had to leave office under strong accusations of corruption , which has undoubtedly diminished his bonuses and chances of accessing the position.
Ezequiel Rodríguez is a member of the physics school of the same university, which gives him particular credentials. At this time he is part of the so-called 'Group of Chemists' that for years had control of the alma mater. However, this situation was lost under the current mandate of the rector Rita María Plancarte , who was an academic in the area of letters.
Candidate Ana María Camarena is considered the candidate of the current university status quo and is running for office based on the view that in many ways the current rectorship controls the university.
A more or less similar view is held of María Elena Robles .
The issue is that the University of Sonora is too important and has too much political weight in the state to be left loose in such a way that groups identified with the PRI , the PAN , and evidently with the Morena party, are seeking to take control of the highest educational institution in Sonora, in search, precisely, of having a beachhead that will allow them to influence the electoral political process that is looming on many levels.
Governor Alfonso Durazo has stated that he does not have a defined candidate to enter the process, however, it is his concern to ensure that the election process within the institution runs under the criteria of the new law 169, and that in the end, the result is indisputable and inexcusable, that is to say, that the election of a new rector does not end up stirring up the already agitated political situation that arises in the face of the 2027 electoral political process.
Of course, the bets are starting to run in Sonora and it is very clear that the one who is likely to win here is the candidate Cuauhtémoc González, since he has support in the academic community in the unions, and is very popular among students in the area of social sciences .
The only detail is that this test is a process that truly reflects the will of the university community , and that it is not a small group of enlightened people, in this case grouped in the university college, who make the decision for an entire community that includes more than 45,000 individuals.
As I said, the dream of the University of Sonora is underway.
