The Prosecutor's Office opens an investigation against Morelos officials for alleged links with the Sinaloa Cartel

The Attorney General's Office (FGR) has opened an investigation file against a mayor and other officials of the State of Morelos from the PAN for a video in which they appear meeting with an alleged leader of the Sinaloa Cartel in the region. The president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has maintained that these types of cases are always investigated by her Government. "There are public servants involved, as well as the camouflaged civilian who appears in the video with a long weapon. There is already an investigation underway in coordination with the Attorney General's Office," said the secretary of public security, Omar García Harfuch. He has not given too many details, but it has been confirmed that officials of the entity are involved in the investigation. "There is a municipal president, a secretary of the City Council and it seems to me that there are three other public servants," said the secretary without giving names.
A week ago, a video was spread on social media in which Jesús Corona Damián and Agustín Toledano Amaro, mayors of Cuautla and Atlatlahucan, respectively, are allegedly seen in a meeting with Júpiter Araujo Bernard, El Barbas, who is located as the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel in the eastern part of the state. In the 40-second video, the current Secretary of Government of Cuautla, Víctor Márquez Vázquez, and Jorge Bazán Reyes, leader of merchants and coordinator of supply squares, are allegedly also seen. The public servants are surrounded by armed subjects and, in front, they have the alleged criminal leader.
This new investigation adds to the actions that the Sheinbaum Government has initiated as part of its security strategy. The mayor and the chief of police of Amanalco, the husband of the municipal president of Tonatico, police commanders from Ixtapaluca, Naucalpan and Tejupilco, and an officer from Texcaltitlán who committed suicide to avoid being captured, all from the State of Mexico, were protagonists of Operation Swarm, the first raid of the Sheinbaum Government against a network of corrupt officials accused of collaborating with crime and of being involved in murders, kidnappings and extortion.

In this new case, Corona Damián has been the first to defend himself. Through a statement sent last week, he maintains that he has nothing to hide or anything to fear because he has always conducted himself with transparency and honesty. The mayor of Cuautla is located as close to the PAN member and former governor of Morelos, Marco Adame. However, in 2024 he jumped from Morena to the PAN to seek his reelection to the position. That is, he won his first nomination as part of the ranks of Morena and the second by the PAN, PRI and PRD coalition. In the case of Toledano Amaro, mayor of Atlatlahucan, he has built his political career in the PAN and is also close to Adame. At the moment, the date on which the events that were videotaped and broadcast on the social network X occurred is unknown.
