The United States eliminates a senior ISIS commander in Syria accused of participating in attack planning: here's what we know.

The U.S. government reported Thursday that Central Command forces eliminated a senior ISIS commander on August 19 in northern Syria during a ground operation.
The slain senior commander was identified as a key player within the ISIS terrorist group for allegedly being involved in planning attacks in Syria and Iraq, according to a statement from the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).

Admiral Brad Cooper, in charge of Central Command, added that the eliminated target, whose name was not revealed, was also a "key financial asset" for the terrorist group.
The report adds that ISIS remains considered an "active threat to U.S. and coalition military forces operating in the region, as well as to the Syrian government, which is seeking to stabilize the territory after years of conflict."
Last July, Centcom also announced that the US military had killed a leader of the Islamic State jihadist group during an operation in Syria.
The operation resulted in the death of an ISIS leader, Dhiya Zawba Muslih al-Hardani, and his two adult sons affiliated with the group, the statement said, using an acronym for the Islamic State group.

These individuals "posed a threat to U.S. and coalition forces, as well as the new Syrian government," it stated. Three women and three children were present at the scene, but none were injured in the operation, Centcom said.
The United States has been carrying out strikes in Syria for years to prevent the Islamic State group from rising from the ashes.
ISIS seized control of large swathes of Syria and Iraq in 2014, proclaiming a "caliphate" and inflicting terror before being defeated in 2019 by an international coalition.
