They blocked the Mexico-Pachuca highway today. Who are they and what are they asking for?

Since the early hours of Wednesday, February 26, the Mexico-Pachuca highway became a point of tension and traffic chaos. Dozens of residents of the Real Firenze subdivision, in Tecámac, State of Mexico , blocked the four lanes at the height of Ojo de Agua , demanding the intervention of state authorities after what they describe as an arbitrary dispossession of their facilities.
At 7:50 am, the highway was completely closed in the direction of Mexico City , causing traffic jams and delays for thousands of motorists. Although at certain times a single lane was opened for brief periods, mobility in the area was severely affected.
Why are Real Firenze residents protesting? The protesters claim that on October 7, 2024, municipal authorities seized the clubhouse and the security booths of the subdivision. The reason, they claim, is a debt of more than 400 thousand pesos for maintenance fees. However, the neighbors claim that the action was unfair and without prior notice.
In addition, they report that people outside the community have taken control of the main access, which has generated security problems and a serious crisis of shortage of drinking water.
The demands of the protestersResidents of Real Firenze are calling on state authorities to intervene immediately to:
Restore their facilities and return control of the clubhouse and guardhouses to them.
Ensure the security of the subdivision and remove any outsiders who have taken control of the accesses.
Regularize the supply of drinking water, a problem that has worsened following the intervention of municipal authorities.
Road alternatives for motoristsGiven the impact of the blockade on the Mexico-Pachuca highway, drivers are advised to take alternate routes:
- Via Morelos for those heading to Mexico City.
- Mexico-Pachuca highway is free, although with high traffic.
- Mexiquense Outer Circuit, as an option to go around the conflict zone.
The demonstration is still active and it is unknown how much longer the blockade will continue.
