Colombia became the country in the world with the third highest number of people displaced by violence, behind only Sudan and Syria, with 7.3 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) at the end of last year, equivalent to 14% of its population.

These figures were revealed by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
Things are far from improving in 2025: in the four and a half months since then, 66,000 new people have been displaced by various conflicts between armed groups or between them and the government, a figure 28% higher than the number of new displaced people registered during all of 2024, the office warned.

It is in the Catatumbo region (Norte de Santander department) where the fighting is intensifying and the most displacement is occurring, with 56,000 people affected.
But this accumulation of displaced people, which is far from a new phenomenon, is faced with the problem of humanitarian cuts that have meant that only 25% of the identified needs are covered, "leaving tens of thousands without assistance," Tremblay recalled.

Despite these displaced population figures and the ongoing violence between factions and dissident armed groups, the UN considers the peace process in Colombia a model, as evidenced by each quarterly session the Security Council devotes to the South American country. It is also a process that garners rare unanimity and praise among the major powers.
