Colombian Presidency

President Gustavo Petro announced that the referendum vote must be repeated in Congress within 48 hours. This happened after, according to the president, a judge issued the order.

"A judge has just upheld our right to a referendum. He determined that there was fraud in the Senate and ordered a repeat vote within the next 48 hours," the head of state stated.

The president announced this court decision during the promotion ceremony for 109 men and women in the National Navy.

During his speech, he also made a direct appeal to senators of all parties, asking them to cast their votes independently and conscientiously. "Make that decision calmly, with your heart set on the Colombian people, with absolute freedom," he emphasized.

In his speech, he also reiterated that the referendum "is not just any proposal," but rather a call "for the primary constituent assembly to decide on its rights."

Immediately afterwards, the Minister of the Interior, Armando Benedetti, issued a statement on his X account. The official indicated that the rights of Congresswoman María José Pizarro were violated by not opening the vote after the request was made.

"Efraín Cepeda cheated. I'm not saying that, but a judge of the Republic did when he ruled that María José Pizarro's rights were violated by not reopening the vote after the appeal was requested. That's just one of six flaws. And now what are they going to do? Reopen the vote? A month has passed. From the second 0, we said there was fraud, tricks, spurious acts, and cheating," he emphasized.

What does the guardianship say?

The protection order referred to by President Petro and Minister Benedetti was resolved on June 6 by the Sixth Civil Court of the Bogotá Circuit.

The document states that the judge upheld the senator's "fundamental right to due process."

Specifically, the ruling states: "PROTECT the fundamental right to due process of which Senator MARÍA JOSÉ PIZARRO is entitled and, consequently, the PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE, Doctor EFRAÍN CEPEDA SARABIA, is ORDERED to resolve, within forty-eight (48) hours following notification of this ruling, the appeal filed by the Senator on May 14, 2025, related to the closing of the vote for the approval or not of a popular consultation."
