The Extremadura Health Service ( SES ) has confirmed three new cases of West Nile fever in Extremadura , one of which is asymptomatic.
Specifically, two men, aged 59 and 76 , respectively, from the Don Benito-Villanueva Health Area , are hospitalized at the Don Benito-Villanueva Hospital. The asymptomatic case is a 37-year-old woman from the Badajoz Health Area, detected through the Extremadura Blood Bank's collaboration in disease surveillance.
In total, five cases of West Nile fever have been recorded in Extremadura in 2025 , two of which remain hospitalized in the Don Benito-Villanueva Health Area, while the second case, reported on August 21 , has already been discharged, the Extremadura Regional Government reports in a press release.
The SES (National Health Service) has informed the management of the eight health areas in Extremadura to remain vigilant in the event of any suspected cases of compatible symptoms, thus maintaining an alert attitude toward possible cases . This will increase diagnostic capacity, although 80 percent of human infections are asymptomatic.
SES RecommendationsThe SES advises keeping swimming pools, ponds, and ponds in good condition and making sure to empty them and prevent objects such as plates under flowerpots, jugs, buckets, toys, pet dishes, and tires, among others, from holding water .
It is also recommended to cover containers or receptacles filled with water outside , as well as to keep the gutters on roofs and patio drains clean, in addition to wearing light-colored clothing and, if possible, covering as much of the body as possible with long sleeves, long pants, closed shoes, etc.

Likewise, avoid using scented soaps, perfumes, and hairsprays , as they can attract insects. Use repellents and insecticides for general use, provided they are authorized as lotions, sprays, or bracelets. The SES recommends installing mosquito nets on doors and windows to prevent mosquitoes from entering.
