Germán Vargas Lleras reappears to condemn the attack on Miguel Uribe: "Democracy is under threat."

Former Vice President Germán Vargas Lleras reappeared on the political scene this Saturday to condemn the attack on Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, which occurred in the afternoon in northern Bogotá. Through his X (formerly Twitter) account, Vargas Lleras expressed his solidarity with the Democratic Center congressman and his family, while demanding security guarantees for all political actors in the country.

“I condemn the cowardly attack against @MiguelUribeT. I express solidarity with him and his family. I demand that the National Government provide effective and urgent security guarantees for all political actors. Democracy is under threat; defending it together is everyone's duty. It is important to know who is behind these acts and inciting violence,” wrote the former minister and senator, whose message has already accumulated more than 110,000 views.
The statement comes hours after it was learned that the vehicle in which Miguel Uribe was traveling was attacked by armed men in the Modelia neighborhood of Bogotá, in the locality of Fontibón, a high-traffic area in the capital. According to preliminary reports, the congressman's security detail responded to the attack and managed to evacuate him without injury. Two bodyguards, however, reportedly suffered minor injuries.
Although the authorities have yet to issue an official report on the perpetrators of the attack , the incident has generated a strong wave of reactions in the political world, which agree that it represents a direct threat to democracy and public debate.

The intervention of Vargas Lleras—who has maintained a low profile in recent months—is interpreted by several analysts as a warning sign in the face of the deteriorating security situation for leaders of different ideological persuasions.
Former President Álvaro Uribe, the natural leader of Miguel Uribe's party, also spoke out, demanding immediate results from the government. Various sectors have called on President Gustavo Petro to convene an extraordinary security council and strengthen measures to protect political leaders.
The country remains vigilant in its investigations to determine who is behind the attack, while concerns grow over the increase in threats and attacks in the run-up to the election.
