Judge Mercè Caso, new president of the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia

Judge Mercè Caso, from the progressive association Judges for Democracy, will be the new president of the High Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC), replacing Jesús María Barrientos, who has held the position for the last nine years.
The General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) has chosen Mercè Caso, former senior judge of Barcelona, to preside over the Catalan high court. She was competing for the position with Cristina Ferrando, from the conservative Professional Association of Magistrates (APM), and Guillem Soler, from the Àgora Judicial platform promoted by Catalan judges following the procés.
Caso was born in Barcelona in 1964 and studied at the University of Barcelona (UB). She entered the judiciary in 1989 and was assigned to the Court of First Instance and Instruction No. 1 of Vilafranca del Penedès, Barcelona. In 2007 she moved to the Special Services situation as a lawyer for the General Council of the Judiciary, specifically as a professor in the Supervised Practice Area of the Judicial School.
