Two missed penalties by Rodolfo Pizarro sealed the fate of Bravos de Juárez in the Leagues Cup. The border team squandered the opportunity to qualify for the quarterfinals, falling 5-3 in the penalty spot to New York Red Bull after a 1-1 draw in regulation on the final day of the binational tournament.
The Bravos needed a win to advance to the next round and eliminate Puebla, who finished in fourth place. This was due to the surprising elimination of the so-called Big Four of Mexican soccer: América, Guadalajara, Cruz Azul, and Pumas. Toluca, Pachuca, Tigres, and Puebla will represent Liga MX in the quarterfinals.
Dylan Nealis opened the scoring before the half ended with a header from a free kick in the penalty area that beat Mexican goalkeeper Sebastián Jurado. The Braves created several opportunities in search of a tie, but were unable to beat Anthony Marcucci, who had a brilliant night.
It wasn't until the 87th minute that a fierce header from Óscar Estupiñán gave Martín Varini's team hope, sending the match to a penalty shootout. Pizarro was the only Bravos player to miss; first, a weak shot was easily saved by Marcucci, but the penalty had to be retaken because one of the goalkeeper's feet wasn't on the line.
In his second attempt, the Tampico native did not change his technique and the result was the same.
In MLS, the teams that qualified for the next round were: Seattle Sounders, who finished the group stage undefeated with a historic 7-0 win over Cruz Azul, Inter Miami, Orlando City, and Portland Timbers.
In other results, Monterrey lost 2-0 to Charlotte, Guadalajara beat Cincinnati 2-1, and La Máquina defeated Colorado 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Isaac del Toro's crash at the start of the Vuelta a Burgos proved to be anecdotal. The Mexican recovered two days after his incident to finish fourth in the third stage of the tour and move up to third in the overall standings, 26 seconds behind leader Leo Bisiaux.
In some parts of the route, his gaze didn't reflect his greatest effort, despite the relentless pedaling in the Spanish hills. Del Toro, in typical style, remained calm throughout the mountainous 185-kilometer route from San Pedro de Cardeña to Valpuesta.
The Ensenada native once again demonstrated his leg power, which brought him close to glory a few months ago in the Giro d'Italia, by accelerating in the final 20 kilometers to stay in the main pack, after leaving behind strong contenders such as Colombian Egan Bernal and American Andrew August.
Just on Tuesday, his positive momentum on the world's major circuits was interrupted by an unfortunate crash 300 meters from the finish line in the first stage of this circuit. Del Toro launched himself against the breakaways and attacked a treacherous corner, one of those most feared by cyclists. It was the cobblestones, the incline, the anxiety of the attack, or pure chance, but the tricolor slipped on that slope and brought down Giulio Ciccone, another favorite.
The story yesterday in the Spanish mountains was different. In the final five kilometers of the race, Del Toro appeared untroubled and invigorated. Given his recent victories in multiple competitions, several experts considered him the favorite to win the third stage due to his strong legs.
However, a hesitation in the final 500 meters by all the leaders, except for the young Frenchman Bisiaux (Decathlon), allowed him to break away from the group and conquer the day, becoming the new leader of the general classification. Italians Ciccone and Giulio Pelizzari completed the podium.

The Mexican climbed to third place overall and will have an intense duel in the coming days with the 20-year-old Frenchman and Pelizzari (2). The fourth and penultimate stage will be run today from Burpellet (Doña Santos) to Regumiel de la Sierra.

The Mexican delegation began its participation yesterday in the 2025 World Games taking place in Chengdu, China, where 40 Mexican national team members will compete in 15 disciplines. Among them will be experienced racquetball player Paola Longoria, winner of gold in the 2022 edition, as well as fellow medalists Valentina Letelier in speed skating and Laura Burgos in Muay Thai.
At the opening ceremony held at the Tianfu International Convention Center, archer Mariana Bernal and wakeboarder Pablo Monroy carried the Mexican flag in the parade welcoming the 6,679 athletes from 116 countries and regions who will participate in the most important multi-sport international competition, second only to the Olympic Games, which will conclude on Sunday, August 17.
Nearly 10,000 spectators gathered beneath the 430-meter-long Tianfu Roof
, the largest wooden structure in Asia. Constructed with nailless interlocking wooden joints, an ancient Chinese architectural technique symbolizing harmony, the roof was illuminated with LED screens displaying the Games logo and the show.

Chihuahua, Chih., A group of 18 Rarámuri athletes will represent Mexico at the Indigenous Masters Games in Ottawa, Canada, including the Mukí Sematí (which means beautiful woman in the Rarámuri language) women's basketball team, from August 14 to 17 in a biannual sports-cultural competition, organized by Indigenous Sports and Wellness Ontario.
Competitions will be held in the following sports: basketball, volleyball, archery, athletics, and arctic sports.
The 18 athletes in the Mexican delegation will participate in athletics, competing in 1,500, 3,000, and 5,000-meter races, and in a cross-country race. They will also compete in basketball with the 10-member women's team, whose participation was promoted in the context of 2025, designated the Year of the Indigenous Woman.
The Rarámuri basketball players are champions of a state Indigenous Basketball League, organized between April and June by the municipal governments of Chihuahua and Guachochi.
Mukí Sematí were the tournament champions; Estrellas, second place, and Leonas, third. In the men's division, Grizzly was crowned champion, Los García were runners-up, and Teporacas took third place.

The Indigenous Masters Games seek to promote sportsmanship among Indigenous athletes from various countries, while fostering cultural exchange and Indigenous heritage.
The opening gala will be held at TD Place, Ottawa's largest sports complex, and the competitions will take place in a cultural village
in Lansdowne Park. In addition to the sporting events, there will be immersive cultural experiences, artistic expressions, and culinary showcases, with Mexico having a tourism and cultural promotion booth.
In the 2023 Games, the Mexican Embassy in Canada arranged for seven Rarámuri runners to participate, and they won a total of 12 medals: six gold, five silver, and one bronze in the 1,500, 3,000, and 5,000 meters.

Mexican Renata Zarazúa, world number 68, achieved an important victory in the first round of the Cincinnati Masters 1000, coming from behind to beat Kazakhstan's Yúliya Putintseva 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. With this result, the Mexico City native advanced to the next round, where she will face 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, world number 12.
