Miguel Ángel Borja and another Copa Libertadores milestone: the record he reached with another goal for River Plate
Miguel Ángel Borja returned to scoring with River Plate in the Copa Libertadores and helped his team secure qualification to the round of 16 with a 6-2 thrashing of Independiente del Valle of Ecuador.
The Colombian striker, who came on in the 61st minute for Sebastián Driussi, scored River's fifth goal in the 88th minute. He received a pass from his compatriot Kevin Castaño, started from the left and, with a hook, entered the area and scored with a cross shot.
Miguel Ángel Borja's milestone: he is now the fourth all-time scorer in the Copa Libertadores
It was just the first goal for the Tierralta (Córdoba) native in the 2025 Copa Libertadores, but it has a very special meaning: he reached 31 goals and became the fourth-highest scorer in the tournament's history.
Borja has now tied the Argentine Daniel Onega and Brazilian Gabigol on the Libertadores all-time scoring charts. Only three players have scored more goals in the Libertadores: Ecuador's Alberto Spencer (54) and Uruguay's Fernando Morena (37) and Pedro Virgilio Rocha (36).

The story of Miguel Ángel Borja in the Copa Libertadores
Borja's Copa Libertadores campaign began with Atlético Nacional, where he joined as a reinforcement for the final stages in 2016. He was key in finishing off the campaign that led Reinaldo Rueda's team to the continental title: he scored five goals, four against Sao Paulo in the semi-finals (two in Brazil and two in Medellín) and one in the final against Independiente del Valle.

In 2017, Borja joined Palmeiras, where he played three seasons and scored 11 goals, nine in 2018 (making him the tournament's top scorer) and two in 2019.

Borja played in two editions of the Libertadores with Junior de Barranquilla: he scored one goal in 2020 and six in 2021. And he has been with River for two years: he scored one goal in 2023, six in 2024, and now he scored his first in 2025.

He's also one of the few Colombian players who can claim to have won both CONMEBOL club tournaments. In 2015, he won the Sudamericana with Santa Fe, scoring no goals, and the following year he won the Libertadores with Nacional. He continues to set milestones.
