Football: Messi out indefinitely due to 'minor muscle injury'

Lionel Messi will be sidelined indefinitely due to a " minor muscle injury in his right leg ," his club Inter Miami said in a statement released Sunday.

The 38-year-old playmaker was injured early in Saturday's match against Mexican club Necaxa in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in a Leagues Cup match between MLS and Mexican teams.

Messi " underwent medical tests to assess the extent of the muscle discomfort he experienced " during the match, which forced him to leave the field, Inter Miami explained in its statement. " The results confirmed a minor muscle injury in his right leg. His return to the field will depend on his clinical progress and response to treatment ," the statement added.

The 38-year-old Argentinian star's return is therefore not planned for the time being, a major blow for Miami in the Leagues Cup, which the club won in 2023 just after Messi's arrival in Florida, the latter having scored 18 goals and provided 9 assists in 18 MLS matches this season.
