Saint Raphaël (83). “Breaking a taboo”: The mayor inaugurates a stele in tribute to the millions of victims of communism, indignation of the PCF which calls for its ban

In Saint-Raphaël, a monument " to the victims of the totalitarianism of communism in France " will be erected, a first in the country, which provokes the indignation of the party. This stele will be inaugurated Saturday, August 23 at 6 p.m. in the Beaurivage park on the occasion of the European Day of Commemoration of the Victims of Totalitarian Regimes, while the PCF for its part has called for a demonstration .
The mayor admits that he wants to "break a memorial taboo" with this act, recognized as "highly symbolic" : "by erecting this monument, we are doing justice to the tens of millions of victims of communism and affirming our commitment to freedom, historical truth and human dignity," the mayor justifies himself. "The victims of Trotsky, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao and Ceausescu are numbered in the millions and yet there has never been a Nuremberg trial of communism. This monument pays tribute to the victims of this ideology," insists the city of Saint-Raphaël in its press release.
The Var section of the PCF denounced a "ignoble and pathetic" initiative, while asking the Var prefect, Simon Babre, to prohibit the installation of this stele.
