The 64-year-old filmmaker was honored for A Simple Accident , filmed clandestinely in his country. His Palme d'Or crowns the career of a committed director and demonstrates the power and vitality of Iranian cinema, despite the constraints imposed by the authorities of the Islamic Republic.

He raised both arms in victory, then sat in his chair for a few minutes, savoring the moment. Jafar Panahi, 64, was visibly moved on Saturday, May 24, as he received the Palme d'Or for A Simple Accident, exactly thirty years after being awarded the Caméra d'Or here for his first film, The White Balloon. Allowed to attend the Cannes Film Festival for the first time in fifteen years, the dissident Iranian filmmaker took the opportunity to call for freedom in his country.
