Juliette Binoche and her jury unveiled the winners of the 78th Cannes Film Festival on Saturday evening, after a very open competition. Led by the French star, the nine members of the jury met in conclave to select, from among the 22 films in competition, the successor to Anora , by American Sean Baker.

Director Jafar Panahi, 64, won the Palme d'Or with A Simple Accident , a morality tale exploring the dilemma of former prisoners tempted to take revenge on their torturer. Hailed by critics, this attack on the Iranian authorities resonates with Panahi's fate, imprisoned twice in Iran, where this clandestinely shot feature could bring him reprisals. The director's presence at Cannes, after being confined in Iran for 15 years, was a highlight.

Earlier in the ceremony, French actress Nadia Melliti, 23, received the Best Actress Award for her first film role in The Little Last One , by her compatriot Hafsia Herzi. A sports student who was spotted in a casting call, she plays 17-year-old Fatima, a young Muslim woman who discovers her homosexuality. The film is adapted from the autobiographical novel by Fatima Daas, published in 2020.
