On Friday, June 7, 2024, plaques paying tribute to the cartoonist Jean-Jacques Sempé were screwed onto the walls of the David Johnston school in Bordeaux, the school that gave birth to "Petit Nicolas." These plaques, which depict the illustrator's biography, are two in number: one is placed inside the courtyard, and the other is hung outside, on a wall.
In the 1950s, Jean-Jacques Sempé began his career as a cartoonist in our newspaper, publishing a few drawings.
In 1954, he had a decisive encounter for the future of his career: René Goscinny. Together, they collaborated on the story of a child, named Nicolas, who tells his daily life with his friends. On March 29, 1959, the first story of "Petit Nicolas" was published in Sud Ouest Dimanche , and from that day on, Sempé had a string of successes. He placed his drawings in several newspapers, such as Ici Paris, L'Express, and Le Figaro until 1978, when he created for the first time, a cover for The New Yorker magazine .
On August 11, 2022, the famous Bordeaux cartoonist died at the age of 89, leaving behind a timeless body of work that continues to enchant young and old alike.
