"We are now officially on strike," announced in a press release the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents the approximately 10,000 flight personnel affected.
Beyond a pay raise, the Canadian airline's cabin crew are also demanding to be paid for the hours they work on the ground, including during boarding, which has not been the case until now.
Seven hundred flights canceledIn response, Air Canada, which directly serves 180 cities worldwide, announced that it had "suspended all operations," including 700 flights scheduled for Saturday, impacting approximately 130,000 passengers. With CUPE filing a 72-hour strike notice on Wednesday, the company had already announced the cancellation of nearly 300 flights on Friday.
In its press release, the company " strongly advises affected customers not to go to the airport" , adding that it "deeply regrets the impact of the strike on customers" .
