Egypt protests Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam inauguration

Last July, Ethiopia announced the completion of its Grand Dam on the Nile, which is scheduled to open in September 2025. Since this announcement, Egypt, which opposes the project, has been mobilizing diplomatic efforts to obstruct the event.
As the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) on the Nile approaches, scheduled for September 2025, Egypt is increasing diplomatic pressure to prevent the event from taking place.
On July 3, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the inauguration date and extended official invitations to Egypt and Sudan, as well as other Nile Basin countries. Since then, Cairo, which has strongly opposed the project for years, has been trying to convince neighboring countries to reject Addis Ababa's invitations.
Since Ethiopia's announcement, Egypt has been actively mobilizing its diplomacy, as evidenced by its recent rapprochement with Uganda, whose President, Yoweri Museveni, also leads the Nile Basin Initiative, a regional partnership.
Egypt hopes that Uganda will contribute to "fostering consensus among the basin states," reports Asharq Al-Awsat .
