Holiday route: beware of convenience store scams

Pirate breakdown services are on the rise along the holiday route. Scammers track down people who have broken down, particularly via smartphone apps. The bill is often hefty.
On the road to your summer vacation this summer, beware of a minor breakdown that turns into a major scam. In the emergency lane, reporting is essential. Yellow vests, warning triangles... Some even post their location on a GPS app. Tow truck drivers take advantage of these indications to scam you. A few weeks ago, on her way home from work, Elisa, a driver, stopped on the side of a national road in Sarthe. Her clutch failed. " I called my insurance company, who told me the tow truck would arrive half an hour later ," she explains.
Fifteen minutes later, a group of seven tow truck drivers arrived at her location. " One of them immediately took the key and went to my car. He sat down and asked me what the problem was ," Elisa describes. The real tow truck driver eventually called her to ask for her location. She then realized she was surrounded by tow truck drivers not authorized to work on this road. She convinced them to leave. The goal of these tow truck drivers: to arrive on the scene before the company mandated by the insurance company.
