In Dunkirk, the CGT ArcelorMittal is mobilizing on the finish line of the Tour de France

Around a hundred protesters, alongside CGT general secretary Sophie Binet, marched this Monday, July 7, along the Tour de France route in Dunkirk (Nord), in support of employees at the ArcelorMittal site in the city, which has been affected by a redundancy plan.

"Metal without Mittal," they chanted to applause, crossing the finish line around 2:30 p.m., before the arrival of the caravan and riders. The rally was organized in consultation with the organizers of the Tour de France. Wearing red T-shirts reading "with the CGT, we'll give our all for our jobs" and carrying union flags, the demonstrators, including union members, employees, and their families, covered the final 400 meters of the day's stage route.

ArcelorMittal announced in April the elimination of more than 600 jobs in France, nearly half of them in Dunkirk, home to Europe's largest blast furnace. At the head of the procession, Sophie Binet came to show her support for the worried employees. Deploring the layoffs at a company supported by public funds, the general secretary of the CGT union once again called for ArcelorMittal to be nationalized "urgently" and "to build a European steel giant like what we were able to do years ago for Airbus."

Social emergency is humanity 's priority every day.

  • By exposing boss violence.
  • By showing what those who work and those who aspire to do so experience.
  • By providing employees with keys to understanding and tools to defend themselves against ultra-liberal policies that degrade their quality of life.
