Paid bicycle parking: a practice that will become widespread

In Belle-Terre, residents of an eco-neighborhood must pay 20 francs to park their bicycles in a space. According to the government, this will become the norm.

Since 2023, Geneva regulations have authorized the charging of bicycle spaces.
Pay for your bike space like you rent a car garage. Regulations have allowed this since 2023. In the Belle-Terre district of Thônex, residents of an eco-neighborhood built in 2021 are experiencing this firsthand. They have to pay 20 francs (per bike) to park in the designated area. "A punishment!" complains a mother whose three children ride two-wheelers. Interviewed by " Le Courrier ," the owner of the premises, Pensimo Management SA, denies any responsibility: these rents were already included in the financial plan. It is simply applying the amounts. Moreover, renting bike spaces is a first for this real estate company.
For its part, the Department of Territory (DT) assures that this practice is compliant. It has even been required since 2023 by the Regulations on Privately Owned Parking Spaces. With the development of soft mobility, the need for parking space and equipment has grown, and legislation has evolved to incorporate these new requirements. According to the State, charging for bicycle spaces will become widespread in the future.
