Thionville: Projects to improve the daily lives of cancer patients at Bel-Air Hospital
Thanks to a donation of 19,598 euros from the Poussières d'étoiles association in Yutz, the oncology teams and the Outpatient Cancer Medicine Unit (Umac) at Bel-Air Hospital in Thionville will be able to carry out a project aimed at improving the daily lives of patients undergoing chemotherapy. This project is based on four pillars and is the culmination of a comprehensive approach. The sum corresponds to the funds raised during the La Yussoise sports race in 2024 .
"The association approached us because it wanted to make a donation locally to help cancer patients. We worked as multidisciplinary teams to come up with projects to improve patients' daily lives," explains Fanny Schaeffer, a health manager in oncology and Umac at Bel-Air Hospital in Thionville.

"We have decided to help people with cancer at the Bel-Air hospital in Thionville. This is a first. In previous years, we have been able to help the pediatric oncology department at the Nancy-Brabois hospital by focusing on pediatric cancers treated there," says Sandrine Blandin, president of the Poussières d'étoiles association in Yutz.
With this sum, the first goal is to renovate a small lounge in a chemotherapy day hospital. This redevelopment and the planned installations are estimated at €10,153. "It will provide patients with a cozy, welcoming, and warm space with a massage chair to make the wait before receiving treatment more bearable," explains Fanny Schaeffer.
The acquisition of a teaching kitchen is also planned. The goal is to allow a dietitian to conduct cooking workshops with patients. "Nutrition is very important in oncology. It's an integral part of care, particularly with protein intake. This teaching kitchen will be able to be moved on casters," she adds. Its cost is €7,450.
Two virtual reality headsets will be purchased to implement online training for caregivers. These headsets will enable the continuous improvement of knowledge and skills for healthcare personnel.
Finally, weather stations will be purchased to help locate the most vulnerable patients. "Some patients don't have cell phones and need to navigate their time and location," she explains.
Orders have been placed and completion is expected by the fall.
