Supreme Court allows Donald Trump to revoke legal status of more than 500,000 immigrants

The Supreme Court on Friday, May 30, 2025, authorized U.S. President Donald Trump to temporarily revoke the legal status of more than 500,000 immigrants , according to a court document.

In March, the Trump administration ended a special program established under his Democratic predecessor, Joe Biden, allowing citizens of Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Haiti to reside in the United States for two years due to the human rights situation in their respective countries.

But a federal judge in Boston, in the northeast of the country, suspended this decision on April 14, ruling that the administration had misinterpreted the law by applying an expedited deportation procedure targeting foreigners who entered the country illegally to immigrants protected by government programs.

"Devastating consequences"

The decision by the Supreme Court, which has a conservative majority , is temporary while an appeals court rules on the merits.

Progressive Justices Ketanji Brown Jackson and Sonia Sotomayor dissented, warning of the "devastating consequences" of disrupting "the lives and livelihoods of nearly half a million noncitizens while their legal claims are pending," according to the Supreme Court document.

On May 19, the Supreme Court also authorized the administration to revoke the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) that prohibited it from deporting some 350,000 Venezuelans.

President Donald Trump has made combating illegal immigration a top priority , calling the United States an "invasion" by "foreign criminals" and promoting widespread deportation. But his mass deportation agenda has been hampered by multiple court rulings.
