Elon Musk's "Department of Government Effectiveness" (DOGE) has also launched a campaign of layoffs at scientific institutions, claiming this will help curb oversized budgets.
These sweeping measures have wreaked havoc in California's labs and research facilities. "We're frustrated," says Needhi Bhalla, a molecular, cellular, and developmental biologist at the University of California (UC) Santa Cruz, "and we're wondering why something that has enjoyed bipartisan support for 70 years is now being targeted."
