Some, among those interviewed by the Californian daily "San Francisco Chronicle," fear that these measures will deprive the United States of future Nobel Prize winners.

The Trump administration has blocked federal funding, cut university resources, and ended programs related to diversity, equality, and inclusion, jeopardizing ongoing scholarship. Elon Musk's "Department of Government Effectiveness" (DOGE) has also launched a campaign of layoffs at scientific institutions, claiming this will help curb oversized budgets.

These sweeping measures have wreaked havoc in California's labs and research facilities. "We're frustrated," says Needhi Bhalla, a molecular, cellular, and developmental biologist at the University of California (UC) Santa Cruz, "and we're wondering why something that has enjoyed bipartisan support for 70 years is now being targeted."
