AI will accelerate the construction of nuclear reactors and improve the efficiency of operating units

The partnership also aims to improve the operation of existing nuclear power plants through advanced data analysis.
As part of the partnership, the companies will combine AI solutions for nuclear energy implemented by Westinghouse – namely HiVE and bertha – with the technologies and experience of Google Cloud to optimize the construction of new power plants.
Improving the efficiency of already operating nuclear unitsAI tools based on data analysis are also intended to contribute to the modernization and improvement of the efficiency of existing units.
“Through our partnership with Google Cloud, which will enhance our HiVE and bertha technologies, and our knowledge based on 75 years of proprietary data, we can accelerate the deployment of new AP1000 units with AI technologies that will optimize the construction and operation of nuclear power plants,” said Dan Sumner, interim CEO of Westinghouse.
"This partnership combines Google Cloud's AI technologies and expertise with Westinghouse's more than a century of nuclear innovation, charting a new path toward a smarter and safer future. AI isn't just a tool; it can give companies a key competitive advantage," said Kyle Jessen, managing director of commercial industry at Google Cloud.
Specialized AI solutions for the nuclear sectorAs part of their collaboration, Westinghouse and Google Cloud have completed their first proof-of-concept project. It leverages Westinghouse's WNEXUS digital design platform and HiVE artificial intelligence, augmented by Google Cloud technologies such as Vertex AI, Gemini, and BigQuery, to autonomously generate and optimize work packages for the modular design of the AP1000 reactor.
In September 2024, Westinghouse launched HiVE and bertha solutions, built on over 75 years of proprietary data and knowledge.
These specialized AI solutions for the nuclear sector, supported by a team of engineers, will optimize the implementation of new nuclear facilities: the AP1000 reactor, AP300 small modular reactors and eVinci microreactor technology.
Westinghouse AI solutions are ready to support power plant operations, helping to deliver reliable and cost-effective electricity to homes and businesses.
As a reminder, the Westinghouse-Bechtel consortium is building Poland's first nuclear power plant. It will feature three Westinghouse AP1000 reactors with a total electrical capacity of up to 3,750 MW.
