League of Nations: Les Bleues dominate Iceland, Eugénie Le Sommer breaks the record for selections in the French team

Second victory in two Nations League matches for the Bleues. Laurent Bonadei's players did not dominate the debates, but ensured victory against Iceland (3-2), Tuesday February 25, at the Marie-Marvingt stadium in Le Mans. With six points, they remain at the top of their group, now three points ahead of their runners-up Norway, winners earlier in the evening against Switzerland (2-1).
Above all, this evening will remain the one that saw Eugénie Le Sommer become the record holder for selections in the French team, dethroning Sandrine Soubeyrand when she came on at the end of the match (199 selections). "I didn't have any female inspiration. My role models were boys. Little girls and boys don't have any more now, and the story will continue," reacted the 35-year-old striker to the microphone of W9.
Despite a rather inhospitable pitch, involving technical waste, the French team quickly got on track for victory. Kadidiatou Diani opened the scoring with a powerful hook-shot combination, hitting the post before shaking the net (23rd). Marie-Antoinette Katoto made the break five minutes later, deceiving the opposing goalkeeper with a shot from the outside of her left foot after a clever backheel from Sakina Karchaoui (28th).
But Iceland confirmed their recent progress against Switzerland (0-0). Wolfsburg striker Sveindis Jonsdottir made Maëlle Lakrar and Thiniba Samoura suffer. On a free kick obtained by the latter, Karolina Vilhjalmsdottir reduced the score, taking advantage of an unfortunate deflection by Selma Bacha (37th). In the second half, Ingibjorg Sigurdarsdottir immediately responded to the goal of 3-1 scored on a powerful strike by Sandy Baltimore (65th), taking advantage of a mistake by Pauline Peyraud-Magnin on a corner (68th).
The score did not change after that, allowing Les Bleues to string together two wins for the first time in 10 months. The next meeting is set for April 4 for the continuation of this League of Nations, against Switzerland, host of the Euro which will be held in July.
