US Open: Images of Benjamin Bonzi's incredible victory over Daniil Medvedev

Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi , who had already beaten Daniil Medvedev in the first round of Wimbledon at the start of the summer, once again dominated the world number 13 on Sunday in his debut at the US Open, after a match full of twists and turns.
51st in the ATP rankings, Bonzi won 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (5/7), 0-6, 6-4 on Court Louis-Armstrong, securing his third victory in as many duels against the Russian, winner of the US Open in 2021.
As he was heading towards a three-set victory, the Frenchman was cut short on his first match point at 5-4, a 5-4 advantage in the third set.
Bonzi missed his first serve, but the chair umpire immediately gave him another one due to "interference" from a courtside photographer. Medvedev immediately became outraged, sparking an uproar in the crowd that interrupted the match for more than five minutes.
At the restart, the Russian saved match point, pushed Bonzi to a tiebreak, and won the third set. Bonzi left the court at the end of the third set and lost the fourth set 6-0, during which he had his right leg massaged several times.
The 29-year-old right-hander snatched the deciding set with courage, twice coming back from a break down to emerge victorious after 3 hours and 45 minutes of combat. Recently coached by his compatriot Nicolas Mahut, the 29-year-old Frenchman will play in the second round against American Marcos Giron (55th), who also emerged victorious in a five-set match against Argentinian Mariano Navone (78th).
Medvedev, for his part, finishes the four Grand Slams played in 2025 with a meager record of one victory, in the first round of the Australian Open.
The fourth Frenchman to reach the second round of the US Open after Arthur Rinderknech (82nd), Ugo Blanchet (184th) and Adrian Mannarino (73rd), who qualified earlier on Sunday, Bonzi reached the third round at Flushing Meadows in 2023, his best result in the final Grand Slam event of the season.
