Vouvant, this legendary medieval city is one of the most beautiful villages in France

Also labeled a Small Town of Character, the town has preserved the remains of the famous castle, built in the 13th century, including the fortified walls, several lime-coated houses, and the famous Mélusine Tower. Vouvant is today a village of painters with a flourishing artistic activity.
The history of the town is closely linked to that of the Lusignan family, states the Accueil Vendée website . It was during the "reign" of these counts that the famous fairy Mélusine is said to have performed her miracle, erecting the castle in one night after escaping from a tower that still bears her name today. Built in the 13th century, this 35 m high tower offers an unmissable view of the entire village as well as the Vendée countryside. It also houses a museum dedicated to the legend of Mélusine. The rest of the village allows you to admire, while strolling along its cobbled streets, many heritage gems built between the 11th and 15th centuries.
