Iran launched retaliatory missile strikes on Israel overnight, killing at least three people and wounding dozens more. It comes after Israeli attacks on the heart of Iran’s nuclear program and armed forces.

Tehran retaliated by launching drones and firing waves of ballistic missiles at Israel, where explosions lit the night skies over Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. The Israeli military urged civilians to head to shelter for hours.

Israel’s assault killed top generals and scientists. Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations said 78 people were killed and more than 320 wounded in the attacks.

Tel Aviv said the barrage was needed to stop Iran from getting any closer to building a nuclear weapon, although experts and the US government have assessed Tehran was not actively working on such a weapon before the strikes.
