Kraków, the former royal capital of Poland and one of the country’s most iconic cultural hubs, has officially been crowned one of Europe's best budget-friendly cities, according to The Independent. Out of 44 European destinations assessed, only seven cities made the final list, and Kraków stood out not only for its affordability but also for its remarkable charm, history, and vibrant atmosphere. Though no longer the political capital of Poland, a status it held until 1596, Kraków remains the country’s second-largest city and is a place where centuries of history blend with lively modern life, offering people a unique experience with plenty to see and do, but without breaking the bank.

Kraków is significantly cheaper than many of Europe’s major tourist hotspots such as Paris, London, or Berlin. According to Visit Krakow, restaurant prices are often up to one-third less than those in other more popular European cities.

Accommodation can be between 45% and 65% cheaper, making it an excellent destination for those that are on a tight budget.

According to Visit Krakow, a budget meal in the city typically costs between £2.50 and £8.50, while a mid-range meal might range from £8.50 to £12.70.

Even high-end dining is accessible, averaging just around £12.70 per person, and a half-litre of draught Polish beer can be enjoyed for as little as £1.70.

Kraków’s UNESCO-listed Old Town is a highlight in itself. At its center is the Rynek Główny, the largest medieval market squares in Europe.

Surrounded by charming streets and winding alleyways, the area is perfect for wandering and discovering hidden cafés, galleries, along with stunning architecture to admire.

Notable landmarks such as St. Mary’s Basilica, the majestic Wawel Castle, and the historic Cloth Hall (Sukiennice) offer visitors the chance to explore Poland’s rich heritage, often at little or no cost as well.

The other six 'best budget' destinations selected by The Independent for 2025 are Bucharest in Romania, Sofia in Bulgaria, the Greek capital of Athens, Lisbon in Portugal, Prague in the Czech Republic, and the stunning walled city of Toledo in Spain.

The flight from London takes just 2.5 hours, and budget airline, WizzAir, is currently offering fares starting at just £16 one-way, at the time of writing.
