DWP benefits you can't claim at State Pension age

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has shared that there are now some 13 million people claiming State Pension in the UK. The regular payments amount to up to £230.25 per week for those on the New State Pension (claimed after 6 April 2016), or £176.45 each week for the Basic State Pension (Category A or B).
How much a person receives depends on the number of National Insurance years they have amassed before reaching the current retirement age of 66 - a minimum of 10 years is necessary to qualify for any State Pension payment.
And for anyone approaching the official retirement age this year, it's important to be aware of which DWP benefits you'll no longer be able to claim- as well as new ones you may now be eligible for, as reported by the Daily Record.
Your State Pension age coincides with your Pension Credit qualifying age unless you are a man born before 6 December 1953. You can confirm your State Pension age and whether you can start claiming Pension Credit on the 'Check your State Pension age' page of the GOV.UK website here.
Turn2us has put together a guide to the benefits you cannot claim from the DWP when you reach State Pension age or Pension Credit age. For comprehensive information on each of the topics listed below, visit the Turn2us website here.
When you reach State Pension age you can no longer claim:
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income Support
- Universal Credit
Turn2us guidance explains: "If you live with a partner and one of you is pension age and the other is not yet pension age, benefit entitlement can be complicated." They advise using the Turn2us benefits calculator to work out potential benefit entitlements or to consult with a benefits adviser for personalised guidance.
Another significant change at State Pension age is the inability to start claims for Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payment (PIP).
However, if you were already in receipt of DLA or PIP before reaching State Pension age, you are entitled to request a renewal of your claim, provided it concerns the same health conditions as previously and your last claim ended less than a year before you reached State Pension age.
Additionally, Bereavement Support Payment and Widowed Parent's Allowance cease to be available once State Pension age is attained.
