Ford calls on Carney to fast-track Ontario resource projects after Liberal election win

Ford calls on Carney to fast-track Ontario resource projects after Liberal election win

Ontario Premier Doug Ford congratulated Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday and called for his support on various infrastructure projects in the province.

"I know campaigns are very tough but at the end of the day, the people have spoken," he said at Queen's Park on Tuesday.

"I always say the people are never wrong when it comes to elections, and now we have to start moving."

The premier released a statement earlier Tuesday, calling on Carney to "fulfill his commitment" to speed up critical mineral and other resource development projects, particularly in the Ring of Fire in northwestern Ontario.

He also asked Carney to support Ontario on future nuclear energy projects and "nation-building infrastructure," including pipelines, highways, railways and airports.

Ontario is committed to working with the federal government, as well as the provinces and territories, to strike down internal trade barriers, he said.

Infrastructure projects in the province will "help Canadian goods reach new customers in new markets while binding our country together and reducing our reliance on the United States," the statement read.

Ford also repeated his consistent calls for federal bail reform, asking Carney to "take violent, repeat offenders off our streets."

Ford 'not worried' by Conservative MP's election night barbs

At Queen's Park on Tuesday, the premier smiled and said he was "not worried" about heated comments by Conservative MP Jamil Jivani, made in an interview with CBC News after he was reelected in Bowmanville–Oshawa North on Monday.

"I'm not worried about that. I'm worried about Ontario, driving prosperity no matter if you're PC or Liberal, NDP or Green Party," Ford said.

"We all need to work together to look at the common problem right now, [which] is these tariffs from President Trump."

Conservative MP Jamil Jivani spoke to CBC's David Common after getting re-elected in Bowmanville-Oshawa North and used the opportunity to criticize Ontario Premier Doug Ford, saying he was a "problem" for the province and country.

Jivani called Ford a "problem" for Ontario and the country on Monday, saying that he interfered with how the Conservative party ran their election campaign.

"He couldn't stay out of our business, always getting his criticism and all his opinions out… trying to position himself as some kind of political genius that we need to be taking cues out," Jivani said.

The MP also called Ford a "hype-man" for the Liberal party.

Ford and his chief of staff had been critical of the Conservative campaign.

'It's hard to run a federal campaign': premier

In the premier's statement Tuesday, he thanked Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, NDP leader Jagmeet Singh "and every candidate who put their name on a ballot for their service to our democracy."

Both Poilievre and Singh lost their seats in Monday's election, though the Conservative leader has said he intends to stay on.

Speaking at Queen's Park, Ford said Poilievre "worked very, very hard."

"It's hard to run a federal campaign," he said.

When the premier was asked if he regretted his criticisms about the Conservative party campaign, he said he's "focused on whoever is going to help Ontario."

"That's who I'm going to work with," he said.

Chow, Crombie congratulate Carney

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow congratulated Carney in a statement Tuesday, saying Toronto is ready to work with the federal government to protect workers and businesses amid the U.S. tariff threat.

"I look forward to working together to build more affordable homes faster, fight rising costs and get Toronto moving by building more transit," she said in a news release.

Ontario Liberal Leader Bonnie Crombie congratulated Carney and all Liberal party volunteers in a post on X on Monday.

"Prime Minister Carney's leadership will be critical as we stand strong against President Trump's tariffs and fight for a Canada that's fair, resilient, and ready for the future," the post read.

Crombie added that she's looking forward "to the fight ahead as we work to grow and strengthen our Liberal family."
