The ACLI: «Attack on Iran, Italy and the EU should dissociate themselves from Trump's decision and work for peace»

The latest developments in the conflict in the Middle East are increasingly involving Italian citizens and a large part of the Third Sector, at all levels. The ACLI , through their national president Emiliano Manfredonia , are once again taking a stand on this issue that truly concerns everyone, without any distinction. "The spread of the war in the Middle East cannot but generate anguish and concern, because it marks an escalation with unpredictable outcomes", declares Manfredonia. " President Trump 's unilateral and probably illegal decision to strike some Iranian nuclear sites will not remain without consequences, and it can already be foreseen that many other human lives will be broken, fueling the spiral of hatred and revenge . This is not about defending an indefensible regime, but about affirming those principles of international law, an authentic protection against the affirmation of the law of the strongest, which has produced the greatest tragedies of humanity: have the events in Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia taught us nothing? "

"True conditions of security are built "unarmed", with diplomacy, with the absolute valorization of international organizations to protect the coexistence of peoples", continues President Manfredonia. "We ask our Government and the European Union to formally dissociate themselves from this reckless action, which will not lead to peace and will increase insecurity at a global level. We also ask to want to reconsider on a European basis the strategy of military alliances, and in any case to want to reaffirm the primacy of peacebuilding, which public opinion in our country and our continent has repeatedly shown to have at heart, most recently with yesterday's large demonstration in Rome".
"Of course we need to reflect on the crisis of democratic systems, when they fall into the hands of unscrupulous people who violate constitutional principles and legal procedures in the name of an autocratic power that is increasingly less different from dictatorships," concludes the president of the ACLI. "Nothing is lost with peace, everything can be lost with war: the grave warning of Pius XII that resounded in the summer of 1939 was recalled a few days ago by Leo XIV , with an appeal for dialogue and the strength of diplomacy. We make it our own in prayer and in the persevering commitment to peace, which is justice and true democracy."
