First team in Pavia to treat addictions to new drugs

It was inaugurated today in Pavia, ESOD, acronym for Hospital Team Specialized in Addictions of the Poison Control Center of the Maugeri Institute. It is the first team in Italy dedicated to the study of new drugs and the taking in charge of patients who use the new substances, for the their identification, the treatment of related symptoms to abuse and the study of appropriate treatments. Clinical toxicology in Italy was born in Pavia, with the start in 1967 of the first School of Specialization in Toxicology and the establishment of the Italian Society of Toxicology. The The Maugeri Poison Control Centre has established itself over time as a point of national reference also in the field of drugs for the Presidency of the Council of Ministers - Department of Political Affairs Anti-drug and at the service of all the hospitals in our country: it is was then chosen to manage the first pilot project national by Guido Bertolaso, regional councillor for welfare Lombardy, present today at the inauguration. "Intervening on young people is an absolute priority for the Welfare of Lombardy Region - Bertolaso declared -. We have 6 million euros have been allocated to be able to realise these interventions in Lombardy. Let's experiment how the new one works multidisciplinary and integrated approach here in Pavia and, when we will have enough experience we will also transfer it to Milan, in Brianza and then in all the other provinces of the region. The ESOD staff is made up of doctors from the Centre Poison control and specialized nursing staff, supported by specialists from Maugeri and psychiatrists from Asst Pavia.
