There are also two drivers from Varese in the list of competitors who will battle it out on the roads of the Rally del Salento this weekend, a fascinating event that is included in the TIR calendar , the Trofeo Italia Rally which is a sort of second most important Italian championship behind the overall CIAR.
In the province of Lecce, both Simone Miele (photo above | Acisport) , who has the TIR as his main program of the season, and the multiple reigning Italian champion, Andrea Crugnola, are expected. He intends to leave his mark also on a race from which he has not been for about ten years but in which he can gain experience and kilometers that are also useful for the Italian championship.
The “Salento” is the third stage of the TIR after the Rally della Marca and the Coppa Valtellina: in the province of Sondrio Miele obtained a very valid second place behind Alessandro Re and with the 12 points collected he rose to third place in a series that promises to be very balanced . The driver from Olgiate Olona is starting with the Skoda Fabia of DreamOne Racing navigated by Luca Beltrame and boasts a third place (2019) in the Apulian race. The goal is to stay close to the leaders considering that the participation of Crugnola himself and another multi-Italian – Paolo Andreucci – can mix up the cards on the table among the contenders for the top of the TIR.
Crugnola will be in Salento together with another Varese native, the very trusty Andrea Sassi, in the role of navigator in what is the conformation of his crew outside of the CIAR (where instead the notes are by Pietro Ometto, with Sassi used in the role of scout). The Citroen C3 of the FPF team, companion of a thousand victories of the champion from Calcinate del Pesce, remains very present . In addition to Miele and Crugnola, the start list includes the two championship leaders, Corrado Pinzano and Alessandro Re, the third in the standings Giuseppe Testa and other highly rated drivers such as Luca Pedersoli and Manuel Sossella (who will have Lele Falzone from Luino as co-driver): all in Skoda Fabias whose dominance will be challenged by the Citroen C3s of Crugnola and Andreucci.
The Rally del Salento – now in its 57th edition – is divided into two days of competition , Friday 23 and Saturday 24 May: the first day will feature the show stage (PS1) on the Pista Salentina in Ugento, the second will feature two laps on the “San Gregorio”, “Ciolo” and “Specchia” sections for a total of six other special stages. The finish is scheduled for Pista Salentina again on Saturday evening.
