On Saturday 24 May 2025, the city of Varese will once again wear the tricolour to commemorate the Battle of Biumo , fought on 26 May 1859. As per tradition, the initiative is being promoted by the association “Varese per l'Italia” , which this year commemorates the 166th anniversary of the clash which saw Garibaldi's volunteers as protagonists.
The celebrations will begin at 5:30 pm with two separate processions: the first will start from Piazza Cacciatori delle Alpi (The courthouse square), led by the Filarmonica Santa Cecilia of Castiglione Olona , with the participation of civil and military authorities and veterans' associations. The route will follow Via San Martino , Piazza Giosuè Carducci , Corso Matteotti and Piazza Podestà .
At the same time, the second procession – opened by the Fanfare of the Bersaglieri A. Vidoletti of Vergiate – will start from Piazza XX Settembre , crossing Via Morosini , Corso Moro , Piazza Monte Grappa and Corso Matteotti .
Both processions will converge at 6 pm in Piazza del Podestà , where a laurel wreath will be laid at the Garibaldian monument and military honours will be rendered.
The ceremony will close with a speech by Antonio Orecchia , history professor at the University of Insubria , as official speaker.
The association invites citizens to display the tricolour and to participate in large numbers, to keep alive the historical memory and values of the Unification of Italy.
