Arms Race, Italy Like Trump's USA: Crosetto and Meloni Also Want the Iron Dome on the Israeli Model

General Portolano speaks

Italy like Donald Trump 's United States but, above all, like Israel . Our country too, following the White House, should equip itself with an Iron Dome system on the model of the one in use in Jerusalem, that is, the sophisticated anti-missile shield operational since 2011 for the protection of the Jewish state from above.
The one who asked for it as the “ number one priority ” was the Chief of the Defence Staff, General Luciano Portolano , who spoke today during a hearing in the Defence Commission of the Chamber of Deputies.
A defensive system, with very high costs for Italy's depleted coffers, which for Portolano "is one of the objectives that we are setting ourselves , is one of the priorities that Minister Crosetto wanted to place as an element within the scope of what is the general inter-force planning". "Today - the Chief of the Defence Staff added in the hearing - air defence systems exist but we do not have a system of total coverage on what is both the national part but above all when we look more extensively at NATO's area of responsibility with reference to the countries on the southern flank of the Alliance".
Words therefore in line with the European arms race, fully supported by the Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto but which remains a complicated dossier for Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni , in difficulty on this front due to the positions of the League .
The general then focused on the current conditions of the Italian army, which over the past 30 years has been “constantly involved in activities related to peacekeeping and peacekeeping missions”. The problem is that, Portolano underlined, today the international scenario requires a change of pace: “Italy must be able to have a credible military capacity , both in terms of defense and deterrence, as the conflict in Ukraine teaches us”. A need that for the Chief of the Defense Staff requires an evolution of the military instrument: “A process of adaptation of the Army is underway to acquire capabilities that we only partially possess or that we have never had. Also because, until yesterday, before the advent of President Trump, these capabilities were substantially guaranteed by our strategic ally: the United States”.
The other key point is obviously Ukraine . Portolano does not mince his words in his hearing: for the general "it is a duty on the part of Italy, as well as the international community, to support Ukraine", because it is a " noble mission ". Kiev must be supported, he added, also through the donation of "ammunition of different types", a circumstance that however "has led to a lowering of the level within what are the national stockpiles".
