Nordio and Piantedosi: Two Ridiculous Ministers

The Tragedy of a Ridiculous Man is a 1981 film by Bernardo Bertolucci . Tognazzi won an award at Cannes for it. The Tragedy of Two Ridiculous Ministers is not a film. It is the exact definition of what has happened in recent days to the most prominent members of the Meloni government: former magistrate Carlo Nordio and Dr. Matteo Piantedosi. Justice and Interior.

The first was caught red-handed by the ministerial tribunal. As L'Unità had anticipated on May 31st, Minister Nordio blatantly lied to Parliament in order to smuggle out Osama Almasri, who had been arrested by Italian police on the orders of the Hague Tribunal. The second—who since he took office at the Ministry of the Interior has done nothing but pander to the Libyans, responsible for countless acts of unprecedented criminal brutality against migrants headed to Europe—flying to Tripoli to meet with Interior Minister Emad Trabelsi , another shady figure, also flagged as a human trafficker by the U.S. State Department. In Libya, Piantedosi nearly ended up in handcuffs. The Cyrenaica police rejected him and expelled him as an unwanted and illegal immigrant , and were kind because they could have also arrested and tried him, and while awaiting sentencing, locked him up in one of Libya's CPRs where prisoners are routinely whipped, tortured, and abused.

Our Piantedosi had a lucky escape, but an Italian minister had never made such a fool of himself . Allowing himself to be humiliated by a friendly government, richly subsidized by Italy and Europe! Old-fashioned satire would have torn him to shreds. Not to mention that Piantedosi is also implicated in the Almasri mess, because it was his ministry that provided the Libyan bandit with a state plane to escape European justice. We'll tell you the full story of what happened. Here, we just want to make a very, very trivial observation. How can two ministers like this remain in office? In no country in the world can a minister who has clearly lied to Parliament remain a minister. Especially since he lied about a very serious matter: the government's complicity in the escape of a criminal accused of dozens of murders, rapes, and torture. And a minister who allowed himself to be humiliated by the Libyans, partly out of cynicism and partly out of obvious incompetence, cannot remain in office.
