Restless Sun, Most Powerful Flare of 2025 Recorded

After weeks of relative calm, the Sun is restless again: at 10:25 Italian time it produced the strongest solar flare recorded in 2025 , a class X event (the most powerful of the five in which these phenomena are classified) that was generated by the new sunspot AR4087 and that triggered radio blackouts in the areas of the planet facing the Sun, namely Europe, Asia and the Middle East. This was reported by the Space Weather Prediction Center of the United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Solar flares are explosions classified by intensity into five classes (A, B, C, M, and X), each involving a tenfold increase in energy. The flare was classified as X2.7 , placing it at the lower end of the most powerful class of solar flares.

The event released a wave of X-rays and extreme ultraviolet radiation that rushed toward Earth at the speed of light, rapidly ionizing the upper atmosphere. This sudden change disrupted high-frequency radio signals, causing communications blackouts for some radio operators in the affected regions.

There may have also been an associated coronal mass ejection (CME) , but confirmation is awaited . CMEs can trigger geomagnetic storms and intense auroras if they collide with the Earth's magnetic field, but for the moment, given that the AR4087 spot is still close to the edge of the Sun, our Planet still seems to be out of the line of fire. However, the situation could change in the coming days, given that AR4087 is rotating towards the Earth and has already proven to be particularly active. On the afternoon of May 13, for example, it produced an M5.3 class event.
