There's been anticipation and anxiety surrounding Lorenzo Bonicelli, the Italian artistic gymnast who fell during his rings routine at the Universiade underway in Essen, Germany. The 23-year-old from Lecco, who had a bad fall during the third rotation of his routine, was treated by the organization's medical team and medical officials from FISU and CUSI before being transported to the nearby University Hospital where he underwent neck surgery. The technical staff accompanying the national university gymnastics team, following the shock, "given the understandable emotional involvement of the rest of the team," have decided to withdraw the team from the competition. While awaiting medical reports, which have yet to be issued, former director of the international federation Steve Butcher has provided some details on social media: "Lorenzo is in a medically induced coma following surgery (on his cervical vertebrae). It will take at least ten days to know his condition."
