Bruni scores a hat-trick, but it's not enough: the Settebello exits in the quarter-finals

July 20, 2025

Lorenzo Bruni
Prato, July 20, 2025 – Lorenzo Bruni was Italy's top scorer, netting a hat trick. But the Prato-born water polo player's contribution wasn't enough this time: Greece won 17-11, meaning the Greeks will now be competing for a medal. This is the conclusion of the quarterfinals of the World Championships in Singapore, which saw the Italian national team lose despite a virtually perfect run up to that point. Head coach Alessandro Campagna didn't mince his words, saying post-match that the Italian team "played the wrong game." The centerforward from Prato thus missed the chance to win what would have been his third World Championship medal, following his silver medals in 2022 and 2024. Before returning home, however, the competition must be fully honored: next Tuesday at 10:00 a.m., the Italians will face Montenegro for fifth place. And Bruni also wants to finish on the best possible foot, before resting and starting to think about his next commitments.
