According to initial reconstructions provided by the Spanish police, the Lamborghini in which the striker was traveling lost control during an overtaking, probably due to a burst tire. The vehicle went off the road and caught fire, generating a fire that also involved the surrounding vegetation.
On board with him was his younger brother, André Jota , 26, also a professional footballer playing for Penafiel. Both died instantly, according to what was reported by rescuers who intervened after the report from witnesses.
