The torn-off guard rail and the destroyed car: the site of Diogo Jota's accident

The images published by a local newspaper show the torn off guard rail at the edge of the road and the wreckage of the car completely destroyed in the accident in which the Portuguese Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his brother André lost their lives, near the city of Zamora, in Spain.

The hypothesis on the dynamics

The Lamborghini they were traveling in apparently lost control after a tire blew out while overtaking another vehicle, leaving the road and catching fire. This is the main hypothesis about the causes of the accident, in which the 28-year-old Liverpool striker and his brother, a 26-year-old professional footballer, lost their lives, and which the Spanish Guardia Civil is working on, leading the investigation.

The accident occurred around 00:30 on Thursday at km 65 of the A-52 motorway in the municipality of Cernadilla, in the province of Zamora, in the northern region of Castile and León. "Everything points to a tire explosion while the car was overtaking," the force said.

The Lamborghini went off the road and caught fire, with the flames quickly spreading to the surrounding vegetation. Despite the timely intervention of emergency services, firefighters and Guardia Civil traffic officers, there was nothing that could be done for the two brothers. The death of the two brothers was confirmed on site and the bodies were transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy.

Authorities continue to collect evidence and testimonies for a complete reconstruction of the accident.
