World Games: Celebrations at the Athletes' Village canceled following Debertolis' death.
It's the saddest day at the Chengdu World Games, where, late last night, news broke of the death of Mattia Debertolis, the 29-year-old Italian athlete who died after four days of agony in Chengdu hospital. There was nothing that could be done for him, including treatment and the arrival of doctors directly from Beijing. His physical condition when he arrived at the hospital, where he was immediately admitted to intensive care, prevented him from regaining full consciousness. His family, who arrived in China yesterday, have asked the Bishop of Chengdu to administer last rites. The Italian athlete's body will arrive in Italy tomorrow, and as a sign of mourning and respect, the World Games Organizing Committee has canceled the large celebration planned for this evening in the athletes' village.
