60 landmines found in Tamaulipas; 30% in rural areas

The Tamaulipas Public Security Secretariat and the National Defense have located 60 artisanal landmines in municipalities in central and northern Tamaulipas , as part of a special operation to dismantle these devices, which have already claimed civilian lives in rural areas .

The most recent discovery included six explosives in González Villarreal , a ejido north of San Fernando .

Sergio Chávez García , head of the Security Secretariat , reported that 30 % of the mines were found in rural areas where criminal cells engage in territorial disputes .
The remaining 70% was hidden in warehouses or concentration areas used by criminal groups and which would be ready to be placed on the roads.
The general warned that, although they were not buried, their risk was just as lethal.
On January 24 of this year, the state government warned about the presence of these homemade weapons in municipalities such as Valle Hermoso, Río Bravo, Reynosa and San Fernando.
In a northern ejido, a US citizen and a family member were killed when a mine detonated, while a woman was injured while traveling in a pickup truck.
Also in Valle Hermoso , a farmer suffered serious injuries and lost his tractor after stepping on a device . At the beginning of February, security forces began searching and only 15 days had passed before authorities had located 40 mines.
“The operation is permanent,” said Chávez García.
